Announcing the June WBN luncheon – June 19th, 2014

Mark your calendars to join us for the June WBN luncheon. Because it’s summer, we’ll meet in a little more relaxed setting–the large pavilion at SCERA Park in Orem. The park is at 600 South State Street in Orem. The parking most convenient to the pavilion is on the west side of the park. 

Our topic, on the other hand, is serious. Dr. Susan Madsen from the Woodbury School of Business at UVU will be speaking on Women Leaders in Utah. She has recently released four Utah research and policy briefs on the status of women leaders in four sectors—politics, nonprofits, education, and business. In this presentation, she will provide a brief overview of the findings and will then discuss the following questions: Why is it important to have more women lead and influence? Why don’t we have more women leaders in Utah? How can we help “move the needle” in terms of getting more women influencing and leading throughout the state?  We’ve included Dr. Madsen’s formidable bio below.

The luncheon will start at 11:30 and go until 1:00. To register, click on the link below. Please pre-register no later than Monday, June16th so that we can have an accurate count for the caterer. Cost to attend the luncheon goes up after the 16th.

About our speaker:

Dr. Susan R. Madsen is the Orin R. Woodbury Professor of Leadership and Ethics in the Woodbury School of Business at Utah Valley University. Susan has been heavily involved for over a decade in researching the lifetime development of prominent women leaders. She has personally interviewed a host of women university presidents, U.S. governors, and international leaders and has had two books and a host of articles published on her work. She is currently an editor for three books on various aspects of women’s leadership—two will be published in the fall and one next year. Overall, Susan has published nearly 100 articles or chapters and presents often in local, national, and international settings. In recent years she has done research in China, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. In 2012 she presented in sessions at the United Nations in New York and Geneva on women, leadership, and education and was also an invited panelist at the New York Times. She has received the Early Career Scholar Award from the Academy of Human Resource Development and has also received numerous awards and honors for her teaching, scholarship, and service. For example, she was recently recognized as one of the 2013 “30 Women to Watch” in Utah and was recently highlighted as one of the Fabulous 40 in Utah Valley Magazine. She also received a PathFinder award from the Salt Lake Chamber in 2012. She recently finished the four year “Utah Women and Education Project” for the state of Utah; she led research team and community task forces to figure out how to get more Utah women to graduate from college. In August of 2013 she founded the “Utah Women and Leadership Project” and has recently released four briefs on the status of Utah women leaders in politics, nonprofits, education, and business. In the past four years, Susan has also founded the AHRD Leadership Special Interest Group, the Women and Leadership Affinity Group within the International Leadership Association, and the Utah Women in Higher Education Network (UWHEN). Dr. Madsen received her doctorate in 2001 from the University of Minnesota in Work, Community, and Family Education with a specialization in human resource development. She has four young adult children and lives in Highland with her husband.
